Employee benefits support for San Diego employers

Competitive benefits that help you hire and keep good people, managed without the headaches.

In a competitive labor market like San Diego's, pay alone rarely wins or keeps good people. Health coverage, retirement savings and time off weigh heavily in a candidate's decision, and in whether an employee stays. For small and mid-sized employers, though, benefits can feel like a maze of plan options, enrollment deadlines, payroll deductions and compliance rules.

Skyward helps businesses and nonprofits across San Diego County and North County design and manage benefit packages that attract and retain talent at a cost the business can sustain. We support the administration of health insurance and retirement plans such as a 401(k), run open enrollment, keep payroll deductions accurate and help your team understand what they are being offered.

We work alongside your insurance broker and retirement plan provider rather than replacing them. Our role is to connect the benefits to your budget, payroll and HR records so everything agrees, and to keep the program compliant and well documented. Because the same team handles your books and payroll, benefit costs show up correctly in your financials and your forecasts.

Who it's for

  • Employers losing candidates or staff to competitors with stronger benefits
  • Companies offering benefits for the first time
  • Businesses whose payroll deductions do not match carrier invoices
  • Owners who want to control rising benefit costs without cutting coverage
  • Nonprofits that need competitive benefits on a tight budget

What's included

Employee Benefits,done properly.

01

Benefit package design

We help you decide what to offer based on your workforce, your competitors and your budget. Options might include health, dental and vision coverage, a retirement plan and other benefits that matter to your team. The aim is a package that helps you hire and retain people at a predictable cost.

02

Health and retirement plan administration support

We support the day-to-day administration of health insurance and retirement or 401(k) plans: enrollments, changes, terminations and payroll deductions. We coordinate with your broker, carriers and plan provider so records stay consistent. Deductions and contributions are reconciled against invoices and payroll.

03

Cost management

We track benefit costs in your books and budget, so you can see what each plan really costs per employee. Ahead of renewal, we model the effect of plan or contribution changes. That gives you facts to bring to the conversation with your broker.

04

Open enrollment and employee communication

We organize open enrollment: timelines, materials, elections and the follow-through into payroll. Benefits are explained to staff in plain language, so employees understand and value what you provide. A benefit employees do not understand does little to retain them.

05

Compliance

Benefits carry their own requirements, including required notices, continuation coverage and California's CalSavers program for employers without a qualifying retirement plan. We help you keep the program documented and on schedule, and coordinate with your plan provider and counsel on technical compliance questions.

FAQ

Employee Benefitsquestions.

Are you an insurance broker?

No. Skyward does not sell insurance or act as a broker. We work alongside your broker and plan providers, handling the administration, cost tracking, payroll integration and employee communication that brokers typically do not cover.

Do California employers have to offer a retirement plan?

California requires most employers that do not offer a qualifying retirement plan, such as a 401(k), to register with CalSavers, the state's retirement savings program, and facilitate payroll deductions. We can help you compare the options and keep the chosen program running correctly through payroll.

How can a small business offer competitive benefits on a budget?

It starts with knowing what your employees value and what each option really costs. Contribution strategies, plan design choices and timing changes to renewal all affect cost. We model those choices so you can offer a strong package at a cost you can sustain.

Why do our payroll deductions not match our insurance invoices?

Mismatches usually come from enrollment changes that did not reach both payroll and the carrier, mid-month hires or terminations, or rate changes at renewal. We reconcile invoices to deductions each month, find the cause and fix the process so it does not repeat.
